About Math & Science at  Heritage

Because Heritage freshmen through seniors are in the same core classes, Heritage does not offer math and science courses as part of our core curriculum. Given the prerequisites necessary for math and science classes, and given that our students are all at different levels in these courses, we have found that we need to offer these courses as electives, making the courses open to all home school students, not just to students taking our core courses. By opening math and science to students not otherwise enrolled in Heritage, it makes it possible for us to provide the necessary courses for our students, while providing a service for the home school community at large.

The Board of Regents of the State of Georgia requires that all students who wish to enter a University System of Georgia school must have at least one math course more advanced than Algebra II. Heritage is offering Pre-Calculus at the Gwinnett campus for the coming academic year. This course satisfies the requirement for a math that is more advanced than Algebra II. If a student plans to pursue a technical degree, Pre-Calculus should be pursued. Freshmen entering high-school as of the 2010-2011 school year must have 4 high-school science credits for graduation.

Prerequisites: Students wishing to take Chemistry or Physics must have completed Algebra I before starting either of these science courses.

Finally, please note that many families have been very late to apply for enrollment in math and science classes. Because we must order books in time for them to arrive before classes start, this has been a serious problem. Furthermore, Heritage has had to pay premium shipping charges to get books in time for classes and incurred other costs and distractions as well. Therefore, beginning with the 2007-2008 year, registration fees for elective applications postmarked July 15 or later will be as follows:

      Math classes:  $295

      Physical Science: $300

      Physics: $310

      Biology and Chemistry: $350

Those whose applications are postmarked June 15 or later will pay the following registration fees:

      Math classes:  $195

      Physical Science: $200

      Physics: $210

      Biology and Chemistry: $250

Elective applications postmarked prior to June 15 will pay the following registration fees:

      Math classes:  $95

      Physical Science: $100

      Physics: $110

      Biology and Chemistry: $150

These figures apply to both the Gwinnett and Athens/Watkinsville campuses.

Math & Science at Athens/Watkinsville Campus

For the 2010-2011 academic year, Advanced Biology, Biology, Chemistry and Physics were offered at the Athens/Watkinsville campus. There was insufficient interest in Physics to hold the class, but we will continue to offer it. We need to have at least six students in a class, so if you are interested in these courses, please submit an application no later than May 15, 2011. We hold registration checks until we know that we will have sufficient students to hold the class.

It is our intent to offer Pre-Calculus at the Athens/Watkinsville campus. If there is sufficient interest in this courses, we will offer it at this campus.

We have also worked out an agreement with an excellent math teacher in Athens. If you are looking for a math tutor in Athens, we recommend that you call Mrs.Welch at (706) 546-7851.

The following math & science courses are scheduled for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Advanced Biology: Fridays, 8:30 - 10:30 Biology: Fridays, 10:30 - 12:30
Chemistry: Fridays, 8:30 - 10:30 Pre-Calculus: Fridays, 12:30 - 2:30

Math & Science at Gwinnett Campus

The following courses will be held on Wednesdays during the 2010-2011 academic year:

Math Science
Pre-Calculus ( 8:30-10:30) Biology (8:30-10:30)
Geometry & Algebra II (10:30-12:30) Physical Science (10:30-12:00)
Pre-Algebra & Algebra (1:00-2:30) Chemistry (12:30-2:30)
  Physics (2:30 - 4:30)

There is also a math lab from 2:30-4:00 on Mondays that is open to all students who would like additional help in any math class.

Math and science courses are scheduled in such a way that students who are taking, say, more advanced math and more advanced science will be able to take both. For example, the advanced math classes are held in the morning, while the advanced science classes are not held until the afternoon. This is to avoid conflicts.

How to include courses not taken at Heritage on student's transcript

The Georgia Accrediting Commission (GAC) allows us to transfer in grades for classes not taken at Heritage and include them on a student's transcript. Prior to the start of classes, parents must complete a form indicating which classes their student(s) will be testing in during the upcoming school year. Students must then attend Heritage for one full academic year before any outside grades may be transferred in. In addition, students must take tests in each course under our auspices at least once each quarter (that is, three times per year per course) during our regularly scheduled test times, which will be posted on the Heritage web site calendar. The grades for quarterly tests are to be reported to our registrar immediately. At the end of the school year, we will need a complete list of all grades for the course for that year (including test grades, grades on quizzes, and grades on lab work), together with a cumulative average for the year.

There is a $15 charge for each test taken for outside courses.

This fee is payable at the time the test is taken.
